Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) was a Dutch painter who is considered one of the greatest artists of the Dutch Golden Age, a period of Dutch art and culture in the 17th century.

Vermeer was born and raised in Delft, Netherlands, where he spent most of his life. He trained as an artist in his youth and is believed to have studied with prominent Dutch painters of the time.

Vermeer is best known for his intimate and meticulously detailed portraits, interiors, and genre scenes, which are characterized by their luminous colors, careful composition, and naturalistic depiction of light and shadow. His paintings often depict scenes of everyday life, such as women at work or leisure, and are notable for their sense of tranquility and quiet contemplation.

Despite his exceptional talent, Vermeer was not widely recognized in his lifetime and struggled financially throughout his career. He produced relatively few paintings, with estimates ranging from 35 to 45 works, and sold most of them to a small group of wealthy patrons in his hometown of Delft.

Vermeer's work was rediscovered in the 19th century by French art critics, who admired his skillful use of color and light. Today, Vermeer is considered one of the greatest artists of all time and his paintings are highly prized by collectors and museums around the world. His most famous works include "Girl with a Pearl Earring," "The Milkmaid," and "View of Delft."
